Fun-filled family friendly activities and entertainment

All activities held at the Wetmore Community Library

Thursday, June 16, 6:30-8:30 pm

Western Night!  Round up the family and enjoy dinner under the stars served from an authentic chuck wagon.  Hamburgers, hot dogs, cowboy beans, chuck wagon biscuits and drinks will be provided.  Tom Flowers, cowboy poet will entertain us with his cowboy storytelling.  Longhorn wrangler, Gary Cole who performs in many parades will arrive for a ride through with his longhorns.  Bring a dish to share and a blanket or lawn chair.

Thursday, July 7, 6:30-8:30 pm

Brought back by popular demand-A fun evening of Celtic Music and Acoustical Guitar performed by Willson and McKee and friends.  Come hear this outstanding group and learn a few Celtic dances.  Refreshments provided.

Thursday, July 21, 1:00 pm

Calling kids of any age!  Illustrator, art appreciation instructor and professional artist, Maria Westy Bush will do an art project with children.  Come and create something fun.

Saturday, August 13, 7:00-9:00 pm

An Annual community favorite!  Come with the whole family for an evening of music and Square Dancing (Arnold Strebe, Caller).  Whether you are an experienced square dancer of have never tried it, you will want to dance all evening.  Watchers also invited.  Lots of fun for all.  Refreshments provided.

June 11 Meeting Reminder

Please plan to attend our June meeting on the 11th at 10:00AM at the History Center.  We need
your in-put and assistance in making plans for our celebratory August meeting.  It is our anniversary and it has been suggested that we celebrate with a picnic or pot luck.  Come with ideas.

As you know the results of the election will be announced and the new officers inducted at our July meeting.
 
We will have some visitors from "Spirits of the Past" from the Heritage Commission, which is part of the sesqui-centennial (150th) anniversary of Fremont County.  Remember-we were part of Fremont County until 1877.
 
If you have not yet mailed in your ballots, please do so.

Clean Up Day at New Hope Cemetery

The annual cleanup day at New Hope Cemetery will be Saturday, May 21 beginning at 8:00 am.  Volunteers are needed to help out.  Be sure to bring water, hat, suncreen, work gloves and tools.

WHG&HS Meeting May 14

Hi Members,
At last some green grass!  Spring must be here because the wind is blowing.
Please plan to attend our May meeting on Saturday, the 14th at 10:00 at the History Center.
We need to make more summer plans before summer comes and goes. 
We had lots of excitement last week with the fire up the canyon.
The month of May is flying  by and we miss seeing  everyone.  We have lots of business to discuss and it is always fun getting together.  We'll be discussing Memorial Day and the cemetery clean-up at New Hope Cemetery.
I sure do hope you can be at the meeting.

Sand Gulch Fire Update 05/05/11 100 % Contained!

From the Front Range Interagency Fire Management Center in Cañon City…

The Sand Gulch Fire is now 100% contained. The size of the fire is 495 acres.

The Type 3 management team has returned control of the fire back to the local unit. There are approximately 50 firefighters committed to the fire.

Today, the two Hot Shot crews and one engine are continuing to patrol for hot spots.

This will be the last e-mail Update on the Sand Gulch Fire. The website inciweb.org will be updated daily for the next few days. A dedicated Fire Information line at the District Office will be staffed from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. That number is 719-269-8723.

From the Front Range Interagency Fire Management Center in Cañon City…

Fire crews continue to make good progress on the Sand Gulch Fire. On Tuesday crews mopped-up and constructed more fire line to contain the fire.

This morning, the fire is reported at 495 acres in size, due to more accurate mapping. It is now considered 85% contained.

The Type 3 management team remains in place. There are approximately 75 firefighters committed to the fire.

Today, the two Hot Shot crews are continuing mop-up operations on the west flank of the fire. Three fire engines will be patrolling the fire area and take actions as necessary.

Fire crews made excellent progress on the Sand Gulch Fire on the San Isabel National Forest yesterday. Saturday’s snow was used to help mop-up and contain the fire.

This morning, the fire remains 555 acres in size and is now considered 70% contained.

The Type 3 management team remains in place. There continues to be approximately 100 firefighters committed to the fire.

Today, the three Hot Shot crews will focus efforts on building line on the west flank of the fire. The 6 fire engines will also remain in the fire area and take actions as necessary.

Sand Gulch Fire Tactical Map and Update 05/02/11

Update received at community meeting 05/01 presented by Gregg Goodland and Paul Crespin of the US Forest Service

Fire is only 50% contained despite the precipitation.  Even with the snowfall, the fire only received approx 1/2" of moisture.

550 acres burned, 140 acres was on private land

Containment: crews will be working and hope to have the fire 100% contained by the  end of the week

Control: monitoring will continue

Out: probably not until the monsoons arrive

Christie Feldmann with the Custer County Office of Emergency Management will be conducting a fire mitigation class in Westcliffe the first part of June.  She will try to schedule a class in the Wetmore area as well.  More details to follow.

Wildland Fire Update - May 02, 2011        10:00

From the Front Range Interagency Fire Management Center in Cañon City…

The Sand Gulch Fire on the San Isabel National Forest experienced significantly decreased activity yesterday. Saturday’s snow on the fire has helped reduce fire activity.

The fire was detected on 4/26/2011 and is located approximately 5 miles southwest of Wetmore, in Custer County.  This morning, the fire remains 555 acres in size and is considered 50% contained.

The Type 3 management team remains in place. There are approximately 100 firefighters working the fire.

Today, the three Hot Shot crews will focus efforts on containing the fire, primarily on the west flank. The 6 Engines will also remain in the fire area and take actions as necessary.

The fire will, likely, produce more smoke in the coming days as the fuels dry out from the snow. Fire managers will remain on the fire as long as it takes to ensure the fires containment.
